Just when you thought Steve Jobs was a corporate businessman with his head squarely set on his shoulders, the CEO of Apple got a kink in his neck. A few months ago I wrote an article on Porn and Corporate Ethics, stating how impressed I was with his stand against permitting pornographic applications on the iPhones.
Apple stated in the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement (sec 3.3.17) that “applications may be rejected if they contain content or materials of any kind (text, graphics, images, photographs, sounds, etc.) that in Apple’s reasonable judgment may be considered obscene, pornographic, or defamatory.”
I was impacted by Jobs’ willingness to take a stand against a very powerful interest group. The adult entertainment industry could have made Apple millions, if not billions, over time. But, Apple took a moral and conscientious stand, something rare among capitalist enterprises, came to the corporate plate, and hit a home run as far as I was concerned, protecting those most vulnerable to the dangers of Internet porn.
However, that was then – this is now. Just recently, a Christian application entitled The Manhattan Declaration, a 4,700-word declaration that speaks in defense of the sanctity of life, traditional marriage, and religious liberty was rejected. Nearly 500,000 Christians signed the Manhattan Declaration including representatives from many major Protestant denominations, leading Catholic Bishops and leaders of the Orthodox Church.
